Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) featherweight kingpin Jose Aldo will defend his 145-pound strap against interim division titleholder Conor McGregor at tonight's (Sat., Dec. 12, 2015) UFC 194 pay-per-view (PPV) event inside MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The winner will exit "Sin City" as the undisputed champion. Aldo (25-1) hasn't lost in over a decade and was last seen winning a tough, five-round war against Chad Mendes earlier this year. "Junior" is ranked No. 1 on the promotion's pound-for-pound list and holds 14 victories by way of knockout or technical knockout. McGregor (17-2), meanwhile, claimed the interim title by knocking out Mendes at UFC 189 earlier this year in Las Vegas, running his Octagon record to a perfect 6-0 in the process. Like the Brazilian, "Notorious" is a master striker, ending 16 bouts with his hands (and feet). This is going to be a war.
Jacaré only fought one time this year, and it was a functional waste of time as he was asked to outclass Chris Camozzi once again. Jacaré has already earned a title shot but I'm glad this fight is happening. Jacaré and Romero aren't two 23 year old prospects fighting each other too soon; they're 30 year olds with as many years of punch in the face contest aptitude who need to challenge the very best pugilists in the world. Romero fights like the ticking clock of father time. He's the red or blue wire opponents would rather avoid cutting altogether. The thing that has always distinguished Jacaré from other elite grapplers besides the development of his striking and general athleticism is his mentality of simple stupid fight philosophy; he's never developed his boxing at the cost of ignoring his striking, and vice versa. He's a creature of economy through and through. This tends to happen with grappler first fighters; they develop at the cost of peripheral growth.
Jacaré still dummies people on the ground. And he strikes like he doesn't have to prove a point. He was the first guy to show cracks in Gegard Mousasi's chin, so when he hits, he hits with power. He's not terribly versatile on the feet, but he has the mechanics and mind for vertical violence. He has a solid jab when chambered, and likes to lean into this leg kick meat soothers when he's feeling especially hungry. Romero is brutal on the feet. He's learned to pressure fighters into his big left hand instead of winging it arbitrarily. Phil compared him to Benson Henderson in the way his efficiency works in mysterious ways that have nothing to do with his power. His power is just the popped cerebellum cherry on top. This is mostly Jacaré's fight to lose. Does Romero have a puncher's chance? Hell yea. Can he keep it on the feet through sheer force of will? Yes. On paper, it looks like Romero's fight to lose. But Souza is cleaner on the feet. His straight ahead punches will get there first, and I think he has enough power to sting Romero and directly transition into a submission win.
